It is a light-colored material, a type of metal-free ceramic. Monolithic zirconia structures are 2-2.5 times stronger than E-max ceramics and 20-30% stronger than metal ceramics.

Zirconium dioxide is supplied in blocks, from which dental prostheses are milled on a dental milling machine according to impressions taken in advance. Zirconium dioxide crowns are placed on the teeth after baking at high temperatures and being colored to match the color of other units of the dentition.

Advantages:

• Minimal tooth preparation for the crown. Zirconium dioxide is a very strong material, so crowns made of it can be thin enough to withstand loads. To install such a crown, it is enough to cut off 0.4-0.6 mm of tooth tissue, while for a metal-ceramic crown, 1.5 – 2 mm is removed.
• Biocompatible, zirconium does not cause allergic reactions. Unlike other materials for crowns, it has the smallest list of contraindications and does not cause galvanic and toxic reactions. The gingiva in the area of crown placement does not change color and looks natural.
• Zircon has a perfect white color and the properties of the natural tooth surface: mattress, translucency, light transmission, and shine. Zircon crowns look very natural and have not changed for many years.
• They are suitable for creating a long bridge for several teeth. Zirconium crowns are lightweight, so they do not place excessive stress on the supporting teeth when the bridge is placed.
• Less chance of tooth decay, as the base of the crown follows the shape of the ground tooth exactly and fits tightly, preventing the entry of germs.

Options for Zirconia Dental Crowns

Standard aesthetics – For standard aesthetic crowns, opaque monolithic zirconia is usually used. Therefore, even after staining, the restoration may stand out against the patient’s natural teeth. This option is recommended for restoring inconspicuous lateral areas of the tooth row.

Individual aesthetics – For zirconia crowns of individual aesthetics, premium ceramic masses are used. The dental technician carefully selects the enamel shade and paints the crown with special colors that can imitate cracks and chalky spots. Thus, the maximum ‘similarity’ to the neighbouring teeth of the patient is achieved.

The chewing tooth is more than 50 percent destroyed
In this case, a zirconia crown can provide a high strength restoration with minimal turning of the tooth hard tissue. The tooth has to be ground down less than in the case of metal-ceramic restorations.

More than 2 teeth in the smile area are missing or severely decayed
Only zirconium dioxide is suitable for patients who require a bridge of more than 4 units in the aesthetically important area. Such a prosthesis is fixed on the sides of pre-sharpened, strengthened teeth.

Also for such cases, if there are no contraindications, implantation is used. Dental implants are implanted into the bone at the site of the defect. After osseointegration, they are loaded with zirconium crowns of high aesthetics on abutments made of the same material.

It is necessary to restore the chewing teeth in bruxism
Patients with bruxism are not recommended to place metal ceramics, as the ceramic coating is quickly worn and chipped due to strong friction. To avoid this, monolithic zirconia dentures are used.

Completely missing teeth on the jaw
If complete teeth are missing, the patient is fitted with a fixed full zirconium denture on 6-8 implants (the number of titanium supports depends on the chosen implantation method).

With proper care and regular check-ups, zirconia crowns can last a lifetime. On average, patients expect to get between ten and 20 years of wear out of their zirconia dental crowns, but some report upwards of 30 years of wear.
